This Naples and Amalfi Coast 7-day itinerary will take you on an unforgettable journey through Italy’s most beautiful and historic locations. From the bustling streets of Naples to the postcard-perfect coastal towns of Sorrento, Positano, and Ravello, there is something for everyone.
I’ve lived in Italy and traveled back to the country on countless occasions, and the Amalfi Coast is among my all-time favorite destinations.

Days 1- 4: Naples and its surroundings
How to get to Naples from the airport
One of the best ways to get to Naples from the airport is by taking a shuttle. It is fast, convenient, and affordable.
Several shuttle services are available, including Airport Bus Express, Terravision, SITA buses, and Alibus, which depart from Naples Capodichino International Airport (NAP) and Naples Central Station.
The ride will be circa 15 minutes long.
Another good option is to book a private transfer.
Private transfers offer several advantages over public transportation, such as convenience, comfort, and affordability. Plus, you won’t have to worry about getting lost.
How to get around Naples
Naples is incredibly easy to explore – just hop on one of the city buses or use the underground.
Metropolitana di Napoli, or the Naples Metro, consists of three lines and stops at some of the city’s most important tourist sites.
Additionally, there are ANM buses (regional bus lines) that can take you all across the region.
Astrameteo operates express lines that connect various parts of Naples to different airports.
If you prefer to travel by train, there is also a regional rail network that connects Naples to localities such as Pompeii, Sorrento, and Salerno.
For a more unique experience, you can use the funicular, which offers great views of some of Naples’ iconic landmarks!
Taxis are also available for those who prefer a more direct option – be sure, though, to check that your driver uses a meter before getting in.
Is Naples dangerous?
Despite its reputation, Naples is generally considered a safe city for tourists.
Still, like in any other metropolis, pickpocketing and petty thievery are common, especially in crowded tourist areas. So be careful and guard your wallet, watch, jewelry, mobiles, and cameras.
Day 1 – Explore Naples
Today, Naples is one of the largest cities in Italy, third to Rome and Milan. However, there were times when it was one of the largest and richest cities in the world. No wonder Naples is home to such wondrous architecture.
In this itinerary, even though you will be staying in Naples for 3 nights, you will only have one day to explore the city.
- Start your day in Piazza del Plebiscito;
- Head to Castel Dell’Ovo;
- Walk on the Lungomare;
- Take the funicular to Castel Sant’Elmo;
- Don’t miss the Chiostro di Santa Chiara in the old city center;
- Sample an authentic pizza at Sorbillo.

Where to stay in Naples
During our visit to Naples, we stayed close to the train station and the city center. However, I would recommend staying in that area only if you are traveling on a budget.
Choose to stay in Spaccanapoli, the Historical Center, or Lungomare Caracciolo. These are all better areas from where you can easily get to the train station and most of the important attractions in town.
BW Signature Collection Hotel Paradiso is my preferred hotel option in Naples. It has a garden, a swimming pool with a sea view, and parking. They also offer airport shuttle services. In addition, the hotel is located in the best-rated area of Naples.
Day 2 – Pompeii & Vesuvius from Naples
No visit to Naples should be complete without a day trip to Pompeii.
I suggest a guided tour of Pompei and Vesuvius. Everything is included; all you have to do is enjoy yourself!
Step back in time and stroll through the ancient ruins of the city destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius. Take a guided tour and admire the well-preserved ruins, artwork, and frescoes of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
Typically, a tour includes a trip atop Mount Vesuvius, from where you can go on a walk around the edge of the crater.
Day 3 – Transfer to Sorrento & explore the city
How to get from Naples to Sorrento
The easiest way to travel from Naples to Sorrento is by train. The Circumvesuviana line runs several times an hour between the two cities.
There are also direct buses available from both Naples Airport and Central Station. The trip takes around 1.5 hours, depending on traffic. Check out bus schedules and options here!
Alternatively, you can rent a car or book a private or shared transfer for a more comfortable journey.

Where to stay in Sorrento
Sorrento is a good option for those looking for a vacation packed with activities.

What to do in a day in Sorrento
The streets of Sorrento are lined with chic boutiques, cafes, and restaurants where visitors can sample some of the best Italian cuisines around.
There’s also plenty to do outdoors including exploring Sorrento’s nearby beaches or taking a boat tour around the bay.
Explore the beautiful city and maybe spend some time at the beach in Marina Grande.
Relax with a glass of wine in Piazza Tasso, wander on the narrow streets, shop for souvenirs, go for a stroll in Villa Communale, and take in the stunning views of the Bay of Naples.

Day 4 – go on a day trip to Ischia and Procida Islands
Ischia and Procida are two enchanting islands off the Amalfi Coast in Italy, and they should be high on your list of places to visit during a Naples and Amalfi Coast 7-day itinerary.
Ischia is known for its thermal spas, volcanic caves, lush gardens, and stunning beaches. The island is also home to some amazing historical sites like Aragonese Castle which dates back to 474 BC!
Meanwhile, Procida has an old-world charm with colorful fisherman’s houses dotted along the harbor front. Here you can explore picturesque coves by kayak or take a boat tour around the island’s crystal clear waters – perfect for swimming or snorkeling! With so much beauty and history packed into these two tiny islands it’s no wonder they make such popular destinations – so don’t miss out on this unique experience while visiting Naples and Amalfi Coast!
The best tour options for visiting Ischia and Procida from Sorrento
From Sorrento: Ischia and Procida Boat Tour – a 10.5 hours tour limited to 12 participants, that will take you to both Ischia and Procida. On your way there, you can enjoy local appetizers and drinks. Once you get to Ischia, you can swim and do some snorkeling at the Green Cave (snorkeling equipment is not included in the price). Moreover, you will have 3-4 hours to explore Ischia on land, and another 1-2 hours for Procida.
Ischia and Procida Boat Tour with Snorkeling – this one is a similar tour, with only an 8 hours duration. The tour starts with a quick stop at Procida, followed by a visit to Ischia island. Up to 12 people are allowed on the tour.
Private Cruise to Ischia and Procida – Yacht 40′ – for this activity, you will rent the boat together with a guide. It is perfect for groups of up to 8 people traveling together, who want to enjoy privacy.
The Amalfi Coast
What is the Amalfi Coast?
The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coast along the Sorrentine Peninsula in southwestern Italy. It features some of the most picturesque towns in the region, including Positano, Amalfi and Ravello.
The steep cliffs drop into crystal clear waters while picturesque pastel-colored houses cling to the rocky shoreline.
Visitors can explore quaint coastal villages, wander narrow winding lanes lined with boutiques and cafes, seek out hidden coves for swimming or dining outdoors by candlelight, take boat trips to explore nearby islands and rugged grottos, or simply relax on one of many beautiful beaches.
The coastline also provides many opportunities for outdoor activities such as fishing, sailing, and hiking. With its history of ancient civilizations and culinary delights like limoncello liqueur made from local lemons – it’s no wonder that this area is considered one of Italy’s most treasured gems!
Is the Amalfi Coast expensive?
The cost of traveling to and from the Amalfi Coast as well as accommodation costs can vary greatly depending on personal preferences.
Generally, accommodation on the Amalfi Coast tends to be more expensive than in other parts of Italy due to its popularity among tourists. Eating out can also be quite costly, but it is possible to find affordable eats if you venture away from the main touristy areas.
Prices for tours, activities, and attractions tend to be around average for an Italian destination – so overall, though not cheap, a trip to the Amalfi Coast is still worth considering!

When you are traveling on a budget, choose to stay in one of these Amalfi budget accommodation options, set in places like Maiori, Vietri, Cetara, or Scala.

Alcione Residence – a family-run hotel with a great location and stunning views, AC in all their rooms. Make sure to book way in advance, because they have only a few rooms. Check when they are available here!
Il San Pietro di Positano – A stunningly beautiful 5* hotel with a vibrant and luxurious interior design, a private beach so you won’t have to worry about the crowds, and a fitness center you will have access to. Day 5 – Positano, Amalfi & Ravello
This is the perfect day trip that will take you to some of the most picturesque villages on the Amalfi Coast. You can get a bus, drive, or book an organized tour that will take you around the winding roads.
The downside of taking the bus is that during the peak season, it can get extremely crowded. We visited on an August day and had to wait for the 3rd bus to come so that we could get in. Even so, we rode the stairs of the bus for the whole trip. If you decide to take the bus, it is worth knowing that you can buy the ticket from any newsstand or convenience store.
Driving on the Amalfi Coast offers comfort and flexibility. However, finding a parking space can prove challenging (especially in Positano or Amalfi), and if you are lucky to find one, expect it to be expensive.
If you choose to drive, here are a few tips:
Choose a small car – roads are narrow and winding, and parking spaces are hard to find.
Rent ahead of time to make sure the right car is available – that is so important! We made a mistake and ended up with an SUV. Choose your car here!
Make insurance – if there’s one place in this world where you don’t want to skip insurance, that’s on the Amalfi Coast!
Plan your itinerary and start early – skip the crowds, traffic jams, and potential accidents.
There are no gas stations along the way, so fill up your tank in Sorrento before driving to Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello.
Positano
Positano is an enchanting town located on the Amalfi Coast, offering visitors a variety of exciting activities to enjoy. From the stunning views from its cobblestone streets and alleys to the crystal-clear waters that line the shore, Positano is a dream destination for those who love outdoor activities such as swimming, hiking, and biking.
The city also offers delicious Italian cuisine, with many seafood restaurants and cafes serving up delectable dishes. Visitors can also explore the colorful shops or visit nearby islands by boat.
Take your time and explore every corner and every hidden street. Climb the stairs that will lead you from the port to the top of the hill, relax at the Spiaggia Grande (the beach in Positano), go for drinks at Franco’s Bar for sunset, taste the locally made limoncello, shop for some colorful beautiful Amalfi Coast ceramics to take home, and take countless amazingly beautiful pictures.
Amalfi
Make your way to Amalfi, only a few kilometers away from Positano. Dominated by the majestic Cathedral dedicated to Sant’Andrea (St. Andrew), Amalfi proffers innumerable testimonies of its glorious past as the Maritime Republic.
Ravello
Tucked away on the top of the hill, from Ravello, you will take advantage of one of the most perfect views in the whole Amalfi Coast.
The village itself is not big, but during your visit here, make sure to see two of the most stunning Italian villas: Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo.
Villa Cimbrone in Ravello is one of the most breathtaking sights on the Amalfi Coast. Located atop a hill overlooking the sea, this historic villa features stunning gardens and terraces that offer visitors an unforgettable view of the region’s dramatic coastline.
The grand building itself dates back to medieval times, and its majestic architecture has been preserved for centuries by generations of owners who have kept it pristinely maintained. Inside, guests can explore a variety of rooms filled with antiques and artwork from around Europe – making Villa Cimbrone a true time capsule into Italy’s past.
Villa Rufolo is a stunning example of medieval architecture and one of the most popular attractions on the Amalfi Coast.
Built by an influential family during the 13th century, Villa Rufolo features exquisite gardens with breathtaking views of the sea below.
Visitors can explore its grand interior or take a stroll through its lush grounds that are said to have inspired composer Richard Wagner’s opera, Parsifal.
In my opinion, the easiest way to see it all in one day, without having to worry about transportation, timetables, parking, or anything else, is by booking a tour from Sorrento.
You can either choose a shared tour (with a maximum of 8 participants), or choose a private tour. Another option (the best in my opinion) would be to book a tour by boat – nothing compares to seeing the colorful villages as you approach by sea.
Day 6 of your Naples and Amalfi Coast 7-day itinerary – day trip to Capri Island + sunset Cruise
Located just off the coast of Naples, Capri is one of Italy’s most beautiful and iconic islands. This small island offers visitors a unique blend of stunning scenery, vibrant culture, and fascinating history.

As an option, you can finish your day with a sunset cruise along the coast. Sail for approximately 2 hours along the coastline with a glass of prosecco in hand, together with a small group of up to 5 people.
Day 7 – Path of Gods hike + Furore + dinner at Il San Pietro di Positano
Hiking the Path of Gods on the Amalfi Coast is an unforgettable experience. The trail follows a stunning section of coastline, with breathtaking views across the Mediterranean Sea and rugged cliffs dropping into crystal clear waters.
Along the way, you’ll pass through quaint coastal villages while taking in some of Italy’s most spectacular scenery. Whether tackling it solo or as part of a guided tour from Sorrento, this hike is sure to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime!

When is the best time to visit
The best time to visit the Amalfi Coast is from April to June, when temperatures are mild and crowds are at their lowest. This period offers dry, sunny days perfect for exploring its seaside towns, rugged coastline, and beautiful beaches.
If you’re looking for a warmer experience, then July through September is the peak season with longer daylight hours and higher temperatures ideal for water activities such as swimming and boat trips. Of course, these months also tend to be more crowded, so it pays to plan ahead!
Should you drive around for your Naples and Amalfi Coast 7-day itinerary?
The answer to whether or not you should drive around for your Naples and Amalfi Coast itinerary depends on several factors.
If you want to experience stunning coastal views, then a car is definitely recommended. However, there are also buses, ferries, and boat tours that can take you between cities, so it really comes down to personal preference. You also need to consider the time of year.
During peak season (July-September), roads may be crowded and parking difficult, making traveling by other means, such as ferry, an attractive option.
Driving a car also gives you more flexibility to explore hidden gems off the beaten path! Ultimately, the decision comes down to how much time you have available and what kind of experience you’re looking for.
Are there any hidden gems in the Amalfi Coast that I should visit?
Yes, the Amalfi Coast is full of hidden gems that are worth visiting. Some of the most beautiful and lesser-known spots include Maiori Beach, Conca dei Marini, Atrani Beach, and Villa Cimbrone in Ravello. Other places to explore include the Punta Campanella nature reserve on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Exploring these off-the-beaten-path locations will bring you up close and personal to some of Italy’s finest scenery.
What is the best way to explore small villages and towns on the coastline?
That would be easiest done by renting a car or by simply taking the bus and getting off in the smaller villages.
Where can I find budget-friendly accommodation in nearby towns or villages on the coast?
Don’t aim for Positano because that’s where prices are high no matter the time of the year. Sorrento is a great choice and I’ve gathered here some apartment-style accommodation options for Sorrento.
Other potential options for accommodation on a budget are Vietri, Cetara, Scala, and even Maiori or the area between Sorrento and Positano.
