5 Reasons Why Vinci Should Be on Your Italian Bucket List
Truthfully, before actually getting to Vinci and learning about its history, I had no idea about this small town. Moreover, even though I speak fluent Italian, I never considered this. Leonardo da Vinci actually means “Leonardo from Vinci”.
On top of that, Vinci is packed with history and a charming, less-crowded hidden gem in Tuscany.
We had the luck to spend one month less than 30 minutes away, and here are five reasons why we think you should put Vinci on your bucket list.

5 Reasons Why Vinci Should Be on Your Italian Bucket List
Leonardo da Vinci’s legacy

As we entered the small village, we understood it revolves around Leonardo. And for good reason. Vinci is forever linked to the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, who was born in the nearby hamlet of Anchiano.
From the 1400s baptismal font where Leonardo is thought to have been baptized to the Leonardo in Vinci Museum, it is easy to step back in time here.
The Leonardo Museum presents one of the most extensive and most original collections devoted to the multiple interests of Leonardo the technologist, the architect, the man of science.
The museum houses models of his inventions, interactive exhibits, and insights into his visionary mind.
Lastly, only 3 kilometers outside of Vinci, travelers can visit Leonardo’s home in Anchiano – the Casa Natale di Leonardo, nestled in the scenic hills that inspired his art and scientific studies.
The breathtaking Tuscan landscape
No matter how many times we approached Vinci, the landscape and its authenticity never ceised to amaze us.
A small village with a handful of houses, Vinci is tucked on the top of a hill. The tower of Chiesa Madre di Santa Croce is visible from distance and is the tallest building around.
Vinci is surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves. And you can admire all that from the main piazza – Piazza dei Guidi.
Small-town charm without the tourist crowds
Even though you might not expect this from such an important place, Vinci is still a hidden gem. While many tourist flock to the streets of Florence or Siena, Vinci remains hidden in plain sight.
We never had an issue in finding a parking space or a place at our favorite caffe in town – Caffè del Castello.
There’s no doubt that here, you can enjoy a leisurely espresso in a quiet piazza, and immerse yourself in the town’s rich history without the rush or noise of busier destinations.
Incredible local wines and olive oils
You cannot talk about Tuscany without talking about wine. And as we drove around Vinci, we noticed a lot of wonderful wine resorts and olive oil producers.
The town is surrounded by vineyards that produce exceptional Chianti Montalbano wines, celebrated for their bold flavors and deep heritage.
Local farms also craft some of the finest extra virgin olive oils, using traditional methods passed down through generations.
We always said we would come back and try the Monna Caterina Wine Resort. From what we saw and read about it, it is a wonderful wine resort, perfectly located in Vinci.
Previous guests enjoyed excellent food and wine here, while admiring Tuscany’s lush wine country.
A perfect base for exploring Tuscany’s countryside
We chose to stay nearby because the location is perfect for exploring Tuscany.
Vinci is just a short drive from other iconic destinations like Florence, Pisa, and Siena.
Despite its proximity to these famous cities, Vinci retains its peaceful, small-town atmosphere, offering a relaxing retreat after day trips.
From here, you can easily access scenic hiking trails, vineyards, and olive groves, all while immersing yourself in the authentic charm of rural Tuscany.
With all this in mind, we strongly encourage you to add Vinci to your Tuscany bucket list. Especially if you want to skip the crowds and discover authentic places.
