5 Hidden Ligurian Villages You’ve Never Heard Of (But Should Definitely Visit)

While the Cinque Terre is undoubtedly one of Italy’s most famous coastal destinations, there are plenty of other hidden Ligurian villages that are often overlooked.

Sure, you will want to go to the Cinque Terre. But gift yourself a more tranquil and authentic experience. Step off the beaten path and mingle with the locals.

Our love affair with Liguria started many years ago and was rekindled once we moved to Tuscany. Imagine colorful villages, small beaches, and cafe bars overlooking the sea.

Even though Tuscany had amazing seaside resorts, Liguria stole our hearts with its colorful harbors, rugged cliffs, and hidden beaches.

Some of these places can be easily reached from the Cinque Terre, so save them for when you get there!

5 Hidden Ligurian Villages You’ve Never Heard Of

Lerici

Lerici - hidden Ligurian villages

Lerici is a coastal treasure, often called the “Pearl of the Gulf of Poets.” With its Venetian-style castle perched above the village, narrow streets leading to the waterfront, and beaches that invite long, leisurely swims, Lerici feels like a step back in time.

Why Visit: The quiet charm and natural beauty of Lerici make it ideal for travelers looking for a peaceful retreat without missing out on Liguria’s coastline.

Don’t Miss: The Castello di Lerici, which offers a rich history and stunning views over the Ligurian Sea.

Extra tip: On Saturdays, you can shop at the local fair. You will find local fashion at great prices – think of cashmere, linen, and cotton.

Also worth knowing is the fact that you can take a boat from the Cinque Terre to Lerici and back.

Camogli

Camogli

Nestled on the Golfo Paradiso (Paradise Gulf), Camogli is a quaint and colorful village that feels frozen in time.

With its picturesque harbor, where fishing boats bob in the water, and the pastel-colored buildings lining the waterfront, Camogli offers a peaceful escape from the busier parts of Liguria.

Why Visit: Camogli has a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for wandering the narrow streets and enjoying seafood in one of its waterfront restaurants.

Don’t Miss: The Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, which overlooks the town and offers stunning coastline views.

Take the train from Genova Nervi Train Station and ride for 35 minutes to Camogli.

Noli

Noli - Hidden Ligurian Villages

Noli, a small medieval town, boasts a rich history and beautiful beaches that remain relatively undiscovered compared to its more famous neighbors.

With its cobblestone streets, ancient churches, and the serene backdrop of the Ligurian Sea, Noli offers the perfect blend of history, nature, and tranquility.

Why Visit: Noli’s peaceful ambiance makes it ideal for those looking to escape the tourist crowds while enjoying beautiful beaches.

Don’t Miss: A visit to the Castello di Noli, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the village and coast.

Extra tip: Without a car, in order to get to Noli from Genoa, you will need to change trains in Finale Ligure. We visited both on a shore day trip during a cruise on the Mediterranean. And we suggest doing the same as the perfect day trip from Genoa.

Porovenere

Portovenere, Liguria

Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Portovenere is located on the eastern side of the Ligurian coast, not far from La Spezia.

Its picturesque harbor, dramatic cliffs, and colorful buildings make it an enchanting village that has inspired poets like Lord Byron.

Why Visit: Portovenere is more relaxed than the Cinque Terre and offers access to nearby islands like Palmaria, which is perfect for a day trip.

Don’t Miss: The Church of St. Peter, perched on the rocky promontory with stunning views over the sea.

Even though it is less crowded than its neighbor, Riomaggiore, I wouldn’t advise you to come here by car. You won’t find many parking spaces, so I encourage you to take the boat from La Spezia.

San Terenzo

San Terenzzo

Tucked just around the bay from Lerici, San Terenzo is a sleepy, sun-soaked village that often flies under the radar.

With its gentle beach, historic promenade, and romantic vibe, it’s a place where time slows down.

Once home to poets Percy and Mary Shelley, the town exudes a literary and laid-back charm.

Why Visit: San Terenzo offers all the beauty of the Ligurian coast without the crowds, perfect for slow mornings, swims, and sunset strolls.

Don’t Miss: Villa Magni, the Shelley residence, and the charming San Giorgio Castle overlooking the bay.

Try the gelato at the Rana Golosa gelateria on the corner. And stop for a coffee at the Bar Gelateria Teddy – they have tables above the beach.

How many of these places have you been to? How many are you adding to your bucket list?
